Cheshire Millennium Pilgrimage
Residencies
Five residencies for the Cheshire Millennium Pilgrimage
were undertaken, which involved communities throughout
Cheshire making a gift for another community and making
a pilgrimage to give it.
She worked with the pupils of Kings Grove High School
to produce a 'gift' for the beautiful old church of
Saint Mary's, Acton near Nantwich. The 'gift' is a
relief with mother and child based on the themes Love,
Joy, Hope. It is made of decorative ceramic tiles
in the tradition of Luca Della Robbia but with modern
ideas and approach. It involves the pupils making
over a hundred tiles, the largest of which is twenty
by sixteen inches followed eight tiles ten inches
by ten inches, and going down to three inches by three
inches for the surround. Overall it is expected to
be over five foot by three foot.
She has also worked at Alsager School exploring sculpture
techniques on the theme of hands. At Wybunbury Delves
Church of England aided Primary, she worked with pupils,
which included making a record of hands of different
members of the community from a baby to the more elderly,
about 20 in total, by making casts of their hands.
These hands formed part of their gift. A residency
based on nature was undertaken at Winsford High Street
Community School and a large bird bath and table were
made as the 'gift' and animals and insects were made
in clay .
At Pikemere County Primary, Alsager, the pupils had
been studying Pepys, and had produced a play on the
fire of London, which they performed at Milton House
Old Peoples Home, Alsager, and also wanted to produce
a gift for them. I worked with pupils on this theme
to make a Mosaic Mirror, and houses in clay of the
period.

A plaque was made as a gift to the old church
of Saint Mary's, Acton near Nantwich, by the
pupils of Kings Grove High School . The size
of the plaque is 165 cms by 110 cms, consists
of over 100 tiles, made by 12 pupils, most of
the tiles involving many processes including
three firings during the decoration. Incorporating
designs from in church, and tiles representing
the town – Crewe – where pupils
live, and the countryside where Acton is and
most of the parishioner’s live, shields
and flowers and oak leaves.
The concept for the design is the message of
the birth of Christ, and birth of any child
viz . love, joy and hope.
Joy -the ideas for the designs
of the 4 tiles come from the Hymn ‘For
the beauty of the Earth....’The four tiles
in this section show the beauty of the earth
,skies, sea, and the joy of human love.
Hope -The four tiles in this
section show hope for a new generation, for
peace between nations, conservation of the planet/
environment, for scientific advancement to help
mankind.

Painting & Sculpture For Local Schools And The
Community
On a number of occasions I have provided residencies
at local schools and for the community in Cheshire
and Staffordshire:
A Residency at Cranberry Junior School, Alsager
based on the history of the Potteries
 |
The figures and tableau involved
a range of techniques and materials used by
pupils 9 to 11.
The sculpture is a scene from the pottery
industry in the 19th century. It shows a pottery
worker handing a plate to a paintress for
decoration. This job was often done by children
at that time.
The background was designed and made by the
children following a visit to the Gladstone
Pottery Museum near Stoke on Trent, where
the pottery industry was first established.
During the residency various
sculpture techniques, and processes used to
make pottery, were incorporated as follows:-
Slip Casting; Plaster Casting ; Life Casting
; Photography ; Head Modelling ; Sculpture
Assembly ;
The residency was recorded on video. Further
details about the video and a copy of the
teacher's notes can be obtained.
